Photonics Technology Letters

Information for Authors

IEEE PHOTONICS TECHNOLOGY LETTERS is published monthly with the purpose of providing rapid publication of original and significant contributions relating to photonic-lightwave components and applications, laser physics and systems, and laser-electrooptic technology. Publication time will be three months from the end of the month in which the contribution is accepted, provided the author responds immediately to all communications. Galley proofs will be sent, but in the interest of fast publication, there may not be time to wait for their return. Lengths of the letters (including title, abstract, and references) may be no more than three printed pages. Please submit manuscripts only to the IEEE/LEOS Editorial Office. For information, please e-mail Fran Jetko. To ensure rapid communication, authors should include full mailing address, telephone and FAX numbers, and e-mail address if available. Submission of a manuscript amounts to assurance that it has received proper clearance from the author's company or institution, that it has not been copyrighted, published, or accepted for publication elsewhere, that it is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere, and that it will not be submitted elsewhere while under consideration.

Manuscripts

Four paper copies of the manuscript must be submitted, each complete with all illustrations. The manuscript must include an abstract limited to about 100 words. The abstract should cover four points: statement of problem, assumptions and methods of solutions, results and conclusion or discussion of the importance of the results. The three printed page limit permits about 2500 words of text in addition to the title, abstract, and references. The amount of text will be reduced by allowance for equations, tables and figures. An average one-column figure with its caption will displace about 220 words of text. A submission containing the equivalent of more than three pages will be returned for shortening immediately and will not be given an official received date. The manuscript should be double spaced on only one side of each 22 x 28 cm (8-1/2 x 11 in) sheet. Good office machine copies are acceptable. Computer notation, such as Fortran notation for formulas, powers of ten, etc. (e.g., x**2, 1.E-10), is not acceptable and will result in automatic rejection of the manuscript. Number all pages, including figures (which should be grouped at the end), in a single series, with no omitted numbers. This helps avoid losses. The style for references, abbreviations, etc., should follow the standard IEEE format. A pamphlet, "Information for IEEE TRANSACTIONS and JOURNALS Authors," is available from the IEEE Transactions/Journals Department, 445 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08855. Prospective authors are urged to read this and follow its recommendations on the organization of their paper. References and captions should each be started on a separate sheet of paper, and must be double-spaced. References require a complete title, a complete author list, and first and last pages cited for each entry. Figure captions should be sufficiently clear so that the figures can be understood without detailed reference to the accompanying text. Do not include captions on the figures themselves. Original figures should be submitted along with the required four manuscript copies. Lettering and details should be large enough to be readily legible when the drawing is reduced to one-column width---as much as 4:1 reduction from the original. Axes of graphs should have self-explanatory labels, not just symbols (e.g.. Electric Field rather than E). Photographs should be used sparingly, and must be glossy prints. All materials, including drawings and photographs, should be no larger than 22 x 28 cm (8-1/2 x 11 in). Figures should be identified with the figure number and author's name on the back; use a soft pencil when identifying photographs, and preferably keep the information outside the margin of the print.

Page Charges

After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author's company or institution will be requested to pay a charge of $110 per printed page to cover part of the cost of publication. Page charges for IEEE PHOTONICS TECHNOLOGY LETTERS, like those for journals of other professional societies, are not obligatory, nor is their payment a prerequisite for publication. The author will receive 100 free reprints without covers if the charge is honored.

Copyright

It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contribution it publishes on behalf of the interests of the IEEE, its authors, and their employers, and to facilitate the appropriate reuse of this material by others. To comply with the US Copyright Law, authors are required to sign an IEEE copyright transfer form before publication. This form returns to authors and their employers full rights to reuse their material for their own purposes. Authors must submit the signed copyright form with their manuscript.

Electronic Publication

The IEEE electronically processes IEEE PHOTONICS TECHNOLOGY LETTERS. This helps speed the production process, insures greater accuracy, and builds an electronic abstract and index base. To complete the production and final printing of your paper, a floppy disk version of your manuscript is required. It is highly recommended that this disk version accompany the original submission of your manuscript to the IEEE/LEOS Editorial Office. Information on the submission of manuscripts by e-mail may be obtained from the IEEE/LEOS Editorial Office.

Files should be submitted via 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" floppy disk. The disk version should match the required (four) paper copies exactly. Package disks to protect them in mailing. Note the operating system, software, and version number used to create your disk. Write this information on the disk label with a felt pen. Make sure your files are self contained, i.e., that there are no pointers to your system set up. Check that your files are complete. Include: abstract, text, references and figure captions. Figures on disk are not required at this time. Do not import graphics files in your text file. If possible, set manuscript column size to 21 picas or 31/2 inch. For the most accurate and efficient transferral of your manuscript, especially one containing extensive mathematics, use TeX, LaTeX, or Troff programs. Include macros used with files. An IEEE LaTeX style file can be obtained by e-mailing: help@ep.ieee.org. Manuscripts developed using WordPerfect, Word, and many other programs are acceptable, but mathematics will be rekeyed into a TeX format at IEEE. If none of these programs is available, send all text aspects of the manuscript in ASCII format. DO NOT put files in a page layout software (Ventura, Quark, Pagemaker, Frame Maker). For Troff programs, DO NOT create special macros; use the standard codes provided by the program. DO NOT send postscript files of the text.
