The Positions: Located in the Photonics Research Laboratory (PRL) in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, which is a major partner in the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Centre. The positions of Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow are required in the area of photonic devices, networks and systems.

The Person: You will work with academic staff and graduate students on a range of problems concerning applications of photonics and optoelectronics to telecommunications and instrumentation. A major focus of the research programme is collaborative research involving research teams in industry and other universities.

You must have completed a PhD degree and have an outstanding research record. Experience in optoelectronics, photonics or optical fibre technology is essential and some experience in high-speed optical fibre communication systems would be an advantage.

The Benefits:

Salary: $44,764 - $53,138 per annum. (Research Fellow Gr 2); $54,835 - $63,229 per annum. (Senior Research Fellow). Employer superannuation 17 per cent and car parking on campus.

Duration: The positions are available initially for 1.5 years, subject to funding.

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Melbourne, Australia, is seeking a lecturer or senior lecturer to play a key role in both teaching and research in the areas of optical telecommunications systems, optical networking, and photonics. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering's Photonics Research Laboratory is a key participant in the Australian Photonics Collaborative Research Centre and has a vibrant research program in optical and photonics systems.

The successful applicant will present lectures and laboratory courses in relevant topics in the undergraduate course and play an active role in the research and consulting activities in the Department including supervision of graduate students.

Applicants must have a record of excellent research and professional achievement. He/she must have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent accreditation and standing. Teaching experience or professional experience in electrical engineering is desirable.

December 15, 1995 RESEARCH SCIENTIST OPTICAL DESIGN AND MODELING

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.   Lead and perform research and development integrating
     modeling, design, sensitivity analysis, fabrication and
     testing of classical, diffractive, binary,  x-ray, and
     biomedical optics and optical systems.

2.   Lead and support contract research proposal activities, and
     interface with the government and commercial organizations
     to generate external funding for the applied optics research
     programs.

3.   Support the development and teaching of innovative applied
     optical and system design courses, and supervise the
     research of doctoral and master s level  graduate students
     in optical science and engineering.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

Ph.D in optical science or engineering, electro-optics or applied physics. A person with a Master s degree and an exceptional track record and experience may be considered.

A consistent and well established record of scholarly and professional activities including publications in refereed journals.

A minimum of 5 years experience in the design, modeling, and integration of optical systems, and proficiency in optical design codes such as SYNOPSYS, and CODE V. Experience in optics fabrication, testing, as well as AutoCAD, 3-D modelling, and FEA software desirable.

Knowledge of programming in FORTRAN and C languages for optical ray tracing, image and data processing, and graphic user interface.

Broad knowledge of applications of lasers, radiometry, optical fabrication and metrology processes is desired.

Good leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

Department Chair, Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, West Virginia University. The chairperson takes an active role in faculty development and works closely with the faculty to promote quality and growth. The appointment is effective July 1, 1996 for a period of five years with yearly reviews and a comprehensive review in the fifth year.

The Department offers ABET accredited B.S. degrees and M.S and Ph.D degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The 16 faculty members, 250 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students have program strengths in microelectronics, power, control, computer engineering and software. The University is at the center of a developing high technology corridor and a rapidly growing industry in software verification and reuse, providing opportunities for the department growth. Postdoctoral Position in Bio-Photonics at UMBC 

An immediate opening existsfor a research associate in the area of novel
light sources and detection systems for sensing and identifying important 
biological processes. The successful candidate will become a member of an 
exciting team with well-equipped laboratories from College of Engineering 
at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), The University of 
Maryland Medical School, and The Johns Hopkins University consisting of 
biochemists, biochemical and electrical engineers. This project has 
extensive funding from N.I.H. and N.S.F. as well as joint partnerships 
with industry. The position requires strong experimental skills in 
photonics and electronics including experience in some of the following

A recent Ph.D. graduate is needed to work on advanced fiber optic
transmission and switching systems.  The project involves investigation of
high speed time division multiplexed systems.  The person should be
proficient in optoelectronic device design and physics, microwave circuit
design and/or fiber optic system experience.  Fiberoptic packaging and
microwave packaging are important aspects of the project.  The candidate
will work extensively with high speed GaAs HBT circuits.  The position is
available immediately.
